Gemini Now Edits PDFs, Docs, Sheets and Code Inside the Chat

Google began rolling out in-chat generation, preview and editing of files in Gemini on October 29, covering PDFs, Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code. Files expand to full-screen editing, and you can highlight a table and ask it to become a graph; PDF editing works on web and mobile, every other format web-only. Users skip the download-and-edit round trip, and the feature is live for all Gemini accounts today. Edit fidelity is unproven, so test whether formatting and formulas survive several edit rounds on your own documents first.

At a glance

  • 1Covers PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code files
  • 2Live today for all Gemini users; PDF preview/editing on web and mobile, everything else web-only for now
  • 3Expand to full-screen editing, or highlight text to ask questions and request changes — turn a table into a chart

What changed

Per The Verge, Google began rolling out in-chat generation, preview, and editing of files in Gemini on October 29. Supported formats include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code files.

Generating files is not new — Gemini gained that earlier this year. What changed is that you can now tweak the output without leaving the app. Previously, fixing a generated spreadsheet or document meant downloading it and editing somewhere else.

How it works in practice

Two interactions stand out. Files can be expanded to full-screen mode for editing instead of living in a cramped inline preview. And you can highlight content inside a file to ask Gemini about it or prompt a change — highlight a table and ask it to become a graph, for example.

Availability and the catch

The feature is available today to all Gemini users, but platform support is uneven: PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile, while every other format is currently web-only. If Gemini on your phone is your main surface, most of this is not there yet.
